BLM Director Kathleen Clarke Will Participate in Resource Advisory Council Meeting by Video Teleconference Bureau of Land Management Director Kathleen Clarke announced today that she will participate in a live broadcast with the citizen-representatives from each of the BLM's Resource Advisory Councils. Clarke will do so by means of a nationally accessible video teleconference with the full membership of 24 councils. The teleconference will take place on November 20, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. MST. "This will be my first opportunity to communicate with all of the Resource Advisory Council members at the same time," Clarke said. "I look forward to talking with them all at once as we strive to further the BLM's mission of consultation, cooperation, and communication-all in the service of conservation." The teleconference will follow an all-day conference on November 19, during which Clarke will meet in person with representatives from each council to discuss council achievements and how to best to facilitate their work to provide advice that can be implemented for future land management. "I relish the fresh perspectives the council members bring to the BLM, as they help us carry out our multiple use mission," Clarke said. "I believe strongly in citizen-centered stewardship. These 15-member councils give ranchers, recreationists, environmentalists, and others an opportunity to reach consensus on public land issues of local concern. I'm eager to hear about what is working and what we can do to further their role in pubic land management." Composed of citizens appointed for their expertise in natural resource issues, the councils, aim to improve the health and productivity of the public lands in the state. Each council provides advice to the Secretary of the Interior through the BLM's field managers concerning planning and management of the public lands within the council's jurisdictional boundary. Interested individuals are welcome to view the teleconference at BLM offices, which will receive the satellite broadcast. The Clarke video teleconference will also be accessible nationally to news media and any other organizations or persons with satellite reception capability. The BLM, an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior, manages more land-261 million surface acres-than any other Federal agency. Most of the country's BLM-managed public land is located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, which has a budget of $1.8 billion and a workforce of 10,000 employees, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the Nation. The BLM's "multiple use" mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The BLM accomplishes this by managing for such resources as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, and energy and mineral development that helps meet the nation's energy needs, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on the public lands.
