New Web Site Provides Centralized Public Access to Geographic Information from the BLM's Public Land Surveys

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) has announced the establishment of a web site from which the public may now download information from the agency's Geographic Coordinate Data Base (GCDB). The new site may be found on the Internet at http://www.blm.gov/gcdb and is designed to provide a geospatial selection tool for downloading the BLM's Public Land Survey System data.

The BLM's geographic information supports decisionmakers in the public and private sectors in applications as varied as commercial zoning, water conservation, property tax assessment, applying for mineral leases, and wildlife management. "This site is designed to provide a 'one-stop shopping' experience to the people who rely on our data to do business," said BLM Assistant Director Pete Culp. "Providing standardized GCDB data over the World Wide Web is just one more example of the BLM's commitment to customer service."

The public will now be able to select and download the spatial information representing the Public Land Survey System from a centralized site via the World Wide Web. GCDB data provides a framework for Geographic Information Systems (GIS), allowing users to view the information spatially. Information may be downloaded from the site in GCDB flat files and as coverages in the ArcInfo format of the Environmental Systems Research Institute, Inc. (ESRI).
