Larry Hamilton is moving to Idaho as the Director of the BLM's National Office of Fire and Aviation, BLM Acting Director Tom Fry, announced today. Hamilton will replace Les Rosenkrance, who is being reassigned as a Special Assistant to the Deputy Director.
"Larry is one of BLM's most prominent and successful leaders," said Fry. "BLM will continue to greatly benefit from his management skills and knowledge as he serves as Director of the BLM's National Office of Fire and Aviation." The National Office is part of the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC).
Hamilton has been the State Director of the Montana and Dakotas since 1993. Before coming to Montana, he was Associate State Director for the BLM's Eastern States Office in Springfield, VA. From 1984-1991, Hamilton served as the Director of the BLM's National Training Center in Phoenix, AZ. He has also held positions in Washington, D.C. Alaska, Nevada and Colorado.
"The opportunity to be Director of BLM's National Office Fire and Aviation provides an exciting new horizon for me, and I'm really looking forward to it," said Hamilton. "BLM has an outstanding fire organization with a truly critical mission. I'm proud to become a part of that. NIFC is the critical link for integrating our Federal fire and emergency management efforts in the West, nationally and internationally. I'm excited about the opportunity to work closely with other NIFC agencies in furthering our mutual goals."
Hamilton earned a doctorate in organizational communication from the University of Denver in 1973. He received a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's in speech communication from California State University, San Francisco. His honors include the U.S. DOI Meritorious Service Award, the President's Award for Outstanding Leadership and the Golden Reel Award for Fish and Wildlife 2000. He has also been recognized by the International Televison Association and the American Society for Training and Development. Hamilton serves on the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, the Prairie Pothole Joint Venture Management Board, and the Interior Columbia River Basin Ecosystem Management Executive Steering Group. Hamilton and his wife Kniffy enjoy hiking, boating, skiing, scuba diving and fly fishing. They have two grown children, Gina and John.
The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, ID is the nation's primary support center for wildland firefighting comprising seven Federal agencies: BLM, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Forest Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, National Park Service, National Weather Service, and the Office of Aircraft Services. Together, they coordinate and support wildland fire and disaster operations. BLM, an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior, manages more land -- 264 million surface acres -- than any other Federal agency. Most of this public land is located in 12 Western states, including Alaska.
