Francis "Fran" Cherry has been named Director of the Alaska State Office of the Bureau of Land Management, BLM Acting Director Tom Fry announced today. Cherry, a 30-year veteran of the BLM who most recently served as Associate State Director of the Bureau's Montana/Dakotas State Office, succeeds Tom Allen as the agency's Director in Alaska.
"Fran Cherry is an experienced, creative manager who seeks solutions until he finds them," said Fry. "He will take that same approach in managing Alaska's more than 87 million acres of public land."
"It is an honor and delight to be named to this position," Cherry said. "My overall management objective in Alaska is simple: to accommodate multiple uses of the public lands while protecting the natural, historical, and other resources on these lands."
As the BLM's Associate State Director in Montana/Dakotas from 1991 until his new appointment, Cherry oversaw all aspects of the Bureau's operations in Montana, North Dakota, and South Dakota.
During his career with the BLM, Cherry has worked as a Natural Resource Specialist and Area Manager of the River Resource Area in Vernal, Utah; as Regional Planner and Chief of the Branch of Planning in the Colorado State Office; and as Manager of the Roswell District Office in New Mexico. Cherry also served in Washington, D.C., as Energy Policy Coordinator and Chief of the Branch of Solid Leasable Minerals.
Cherry, a native of Utah, earned his Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from Brigham Young University and received his Master of Science degree in Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Wisconsin. His outside activities include hunting and fishing.
The BLM, an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior, manages more land -- 264 million surface acres -- than any other Federal agency. Most of this public land is located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau also administers more than 560 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM, which has an annual budget of more than $1.2 billion, carries out its land management mission with a workforce of about 9,000 employees.
