The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), an agency of the Department of the Interior, today announced the availability of Public Rewards from Public Lands, a publication featuring the benefits that the American people receive from their public lands, including the agency's role in conserving open space.
Public Rewards from Public Lands celebrates the BLM as the nation's open-space agency," said BLM Acting Director Tom Fry. "Every activity that we manage on the public lands, whether related to conservation, recreation or commodity extraction, helps ensure that we'll pass on the magnificent open spaces of the West to future generations." The BLM manages 264 million acres, making it the nation's foremost preserver of open space.
Public Rewards points out the benefits that the American people receive from the diverse resources on BLM-managed public lands, including livestock forage, energy and minerals, timber, fish and wildlife habitat, scenic and recreational sites, Wilderness Areas, and archaeological and historic sites. The publication provides detailed information on specific recreational areas of the public lands, as well as each public land state's heritage assets.
Public Rewards notes that the BLM generates more funds than it spends, making it an asset to the taxpayer. In Fiscal Year 1998, the BLM's budget was approximately $1.2 billion and activities on the BLM-managed public lands generated approximately $1.3 billion. The BLM shared these receipts with states where the lands are located. In 1998, the states received over $740 million, including $118 in Payments in Lieu of Taxes. Through its funding of programs in each state, such as oil and gas leasing and grazing, the BLM provided further investment in the states of $687 million.
In addition to the national publication, state-specific copies with full-color covers are also available. Copies of Public Rewards From Public Lands may be obtained from all BLM State Public Affairs Offices and from the agency's headquarters in Washington, D.C. The publication is also available on BLM's Home Page at http://www.blm.gov/nhp/pubs/rewards/1999/.
