BLM Announces New Hire and Position in Agreement with Langston University

As part of an agreement aimed at increasing the number of minority students who study natural resources, Bureau of Land Management (BLM) acting Director Tom Fry today announced the appointment of a Langston University student to its hazardous materials program and the creation of a new position to recruit students.

Langston University, a historically black university in Langston, Okla., and the BLM have worked together under an agreement since September 1997 to encourage students to consider careers with natural resource agencies.

"The challenges we all face in natural resource management are great today, and they will be even more so tomorrow," Fry said. "It's part of our responsibility as a federal agency to help develop a well-trained, culturally diverse workforce for the future."

LaVonda Bonnard, a senior majoring in biology has been hired in the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP). Bonnard, from Sacramento, Calif., will work in BLM's Needle Field Office as a hazardous materials specialist.

The BLM will also hire a Langston student to represent BLM part-time as a liaison between students and the BLM. The student will staff a small exhibit and recruitment office in the Student Union building.

"I am committed to recruiting and hiring a talented workforce that reflects America's diversity," Fry said. "Our relationship with the people at Langston University is essential to our ability to do that, and I appreciate their willingness to work with us."

The BLM, an agency of the U.S. Department of the Interior, manages about 264 million acres of Federal land, most of it in 12 Western States, including Alaska, for a variety of public uses, such as grazing, mining, hunting, fishing, and camping.
