BLM Hosts "National Trails Day" Events

The Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will host over 20 events and projects in 8 States in the West to celebrate National Trails Day, June 6, 1998. The events range from interpretive hikes in Arizona and guided mountain bike tours in Colorado to trail maintenance and construction projects in California.

"America's public lands are a treasure trove of natural wonders. National Trails Day provides an opportunity for us to experience these treasures firsthand. It's a chance for all Americans to appreciate the magnificent opportunities available on their lands," said BLM Director Pat Shea.

National Trails Day is a nationwide day of events to promote community trail planning, increase public awareness of trails, encourage trail conservation, and celebrate the values and benefits America's treasured trails provide. Trails promote fitness, serve as outdoor classrooms for nature study, and provide a look at our past as marked by historic journeys. Through annual events and the long-term efforts of the various Federal agencies, the American Hiking Society, outdoor retailers, trails clubs, communities, and dedicated recreationists and volunteers, the National Trails Day initiative will eventually establish a nationwide network of trails and greenways within 15 minutes of most American homes.

BLM events include a dedication of the Cottonwood Valley Mountain Bike and Equestrian Trails Network of 67 miles of trails organized into 9 different trails rides, a partnership between the BLM's Las Vegas, Nevada District and the Las Vegas Distance Riders, Drinkers of the Wind, and Las Vegas Valley Bicycle Club. In Colorado, volunteers will finish tread work, install stone steps, and rock walls at the Marsh Quarry Interpretive Trail of the BLM's Garden Park Fossil Area. In Montana, the Pompeys Pillar Association, in cooperation with the BLM and the Huntley Lions Club, will host a living history presentation along the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. The BLM's Phoenix, Arizona Field Office, officials from Arizona State Parks, and the Town of Wickenburg will celebrate National Trails Day by commemorating and dedicating the completion of the construction of the Vulture Peak Trail Project.
