Bureau of Land Management Deputy Director Mat Millenbach is leaving his position to become the Program Manager for the Department of the Interior's Natural Resources Damage Assessment (NRDA) program, BLM Director Pat Shea announced today. Millenbach, who has been the BLM's Deputy Director since September 1995, will work under Brooks Yeager, who is Deputy Assistant Secretary for Policy and International Relations.
Millenbach will be responsible for management of the NRDA program within Interior, and will assume his new position November 10. NRDA is a governmentwide program created under the "Superfund" law to identify and assess the extent of injury to natural resources caused by oil or hazardous chemical spills, and restore injured resources. All major land and resource management bureaus within Interior are involved in the NRDA program.
Millenbach served as the BLM's Utah State Director before becoming the agency's Deputy Director, a position he filled at the request of Secretary of the Interior Bruce Babbitt. Prior to his Utah State directorship, Millenbach worked for Bob Armstrong, Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management. During his 25-year BLM career, Millenbach has served in a variety of other BLM and Interior Department staff positions in Washington, D.C., and in BLM field offices in Montana, New Mexico, and California.
Millenbach, who had originally intended to return to Utah, said his new job would be "another career challenge" while allowing his family to remain in the Washington, D.C., area. "We are a two-career household, and my wife Linda and our two daughters have been willing to re-locate time and time again for me. It's now my wife's and our daughters' turn to decide where we live, and they would like to stay in the Washington metropolitan area."
Secretary Babbitt welcomed Millenbach to his new post, saying, "Mat brings with him a wealth of Washington- and field-related experience that we value highly in the Department." Director Shea praised Millenbach for his "outstanding service as Deputy Director. I will miss Mat, but I know that the BLM will continue to enjoy a close relationship with Mat on both a professional and personal level."
Millenbach, 54, is a Vietnam veteran. He served in the late 1960s as an Army artillery forward observer and firing battery executive officer. He holds a degree in forestry from Michigan State University.
Millenbach's Federal career dates back to his college years, when he worked summers as a firefighter for the U.S. Forest Service.
