The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will hold a meeting in Washington, D.C., on
Thursday, October 16, to encourage public participation in the BLM's development of a
management plan for the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in Utah. "This
workshop will give people an opportunity to help shape the future management of the
Monument," said BLM Director Pat Shea.
The workshop-style meeting will give the public an opportunity to learn more about the
Bureau's planning process and to offer their ideas about how the BLM should manage this
national monument. The BLM will maximize participation by using a small-group discussion
format. The meeting will be held at the Capital Hilton, 16th and K Streets, N.W., from
7:00 p.m - 9:30 p.m., in the South American Room.
"Our goal is a shared vision for managing the Monument," said Shea. Shea noted
that the Washington, D.C., meeting is part of the BLM's three-year planning process aimed
at developing a Monument Management Plan by September 1999. Thus far, the BLM has held 14
meetings in Utah and other Western States on the management plan.
The BLM encourages anyone who is unable to attend the workshop to write to the Monument
planning office for a "Visions Kit." This kit, which includes a map,
descriptions of the landscape, and the Bureau's guiding planning principles, outlines the
planning process and enables readers to make specific comments related to that process. A
copy of the kit can be obtained by writing to the Grand Staircase-Escalante National
Monument Planning Office, 337 South Main Street, Suite 010, Cedar City, UT 84720.
A computerized version of the Visions Kit is also available on the Monument Home Page
