BLM Invites Nominations For Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board

The Bureau of Land Management announced today that it is soliciting nominations for a Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board that the BLM will soon re-establish. The Bureau is re-establishing the board as part of its effort to improve management of the 42,000 wild horses and burros that roam public lands in the West.

"I encourage groups and individuals to submit nominations for membership on the board," said BLM Acting Director Sylvia Baca. "The board will serve as an additional source of expert guidance and seasoned counsel on a variety of matters relating to the Wild Horse and Burro Program. This is another important step in our ongoing effort to improve the way we manage and protect these living legends of the Old West."

The BLM announced its intention to re-establish the board by means of a notice in today's Federal Register. The board will have up to nine members, who may represent at least one of the following categories: wild horse and burro advocacy groups; wild horse and burro research (especially genetics and population biology); veterinary medicine (equine science); natural resource management (especially rangeland science); humane organizations; wildlife management; livestock management; and the general public. (Under the provisions of the Wild and Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971, members of the board cannot be employees of the Federal Government or of a state government.)

Any individual or group may nominate one or more persons to serve on the Wild Horse and Burro Advisory Board. Individuals may also nominate themselves for board membership. All nomination letters should include the name, address, profession, relevant biographical data, and reference sources for each nominee. Letters should be sent to Jim Fox, Bureau of Land Management, LS-314, 1849 C Street, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20240. Nominations may also be submitted to Mr. Fox's electronic mail address (jlfox@wo.blm.gov). Nominations must be submitted no later than July 5, 1997.
