BLM Selects Michael Crouse for Science Award

The Bureau of Land Management has selected Michael R. Crouse as the 1996 recipient of the agency's new Director's Science Award, BLM Acting Director Mike Dombeck announced today. Crouse serves in the BLM's Oregon State Office as Chief of the Branch of Biological Sciences in the Division of Resource Planning, Use, and Protection. The science award recognizes Crouse's leadership in several national and regional science initiatives, including the Northwest Forest Plan, the Cooperative Forest Ecosystem Research Program, and the PACFISH program, an interagency effort to restore habitat for Pacific Northwest fish, including salmon.

The BLM created the Director's Science Award this year to recognize BLM managers who have done an exceptional job of helping the agency achieve its science-related goals. The award also recognizes managers' leadership in using science in resource management decisions. "As the agency that manages 270 million acres of public lands on behalf of all Americans, the BLM is committed to using the best scientific and technical information to make sound resource management decisions," Dombeck said. "We work closely with government agencies and academic institutions to obtain this information and then share it with our land managers so they can advance our efforts to improve the health and productivity of the land."

Dombeck commended Crouse for using "state-of-the-art science" to further the BLM's resource management goals. "The research strategy that Michael Crouse and his staff have developed for Oregon and Washington has become a model program for the BLM," Dombeck said.

Crouse and his wife, Alice, live in Portland, Oregon with their three sons.
