BLM Names Gayle Gordon to Newly Created Information Post

The Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management today announced the appointment of Gayle F. Gordon as the agency's new Assistant Director for Information Resources Management. Gordon joins the BLM in Washington, D.C. on September 30 and will move to her permanent duty station in Denver later in the fall.

Gordon will head the BLM's new Information Resources Management Directorate, which will coordinate the development of agency-wide policies and procedures concerning data administration, records administration, information access and security, and geographic sciences, including the Public Land Survey System. Gordon will be responsible for assessing BLM's information management skills and for monitoring and evaluating the performance of information technology programs.

Gordon moves to BLM from the Interior Department's Office of Information Resources Management, where she has held the post of Acting Director since January 1995, before which time she served for six years as Deputy Director. She was awarded the Presidential Rank of Meritorious Executive in 1993.

"Gayle's exceptional background gives her the experience to lead the development of the very complex public land information systems we need to serve our millions of customers in the coming years," said BLM Acting Director Mike Dombeck.

The BLM, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has an annual budget of about $1 billion and a workforce of about 9,000 employees operating mainly in the 11 western states. The agency manages the public lands for a wide variety of customers and stakeholders. These include: the American people; commercial users such as miners and ranchers; non-permitted users such as hikers, hunters and fishermen; users of information and other specialized services; adjacent landowners and others impacted by the use of the public lands; State, local and Tribal governments, and Congress.

Gordon received a B.A. in Political Science and Economics from the University of Wisconsin, an M.S. in Technology Management from the American University, and a masters and doctorate in Public Administration from the University of Southern California. She resides in Reston, Virginia, with her husband, Rob Wesson, who is a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey.
