Dombeck Announces Appointments of Johnson, Burrell to Key BLM Posts

Bureau of Land Management Acting Director Mike Dombeck announced today that Marilyn H. Johnson is the Bureau's new Associate State Director for the BLM's Eastern States Office. Carolyn M. Burrell succeeds Johnson in the position of Assistant Director of Human Resources Management. "Marilyn Johnson and Carolyn Burrell bring a wealth of talent to their new assignments," Dombeck said. "Their knowledge, people skills, and experience have been and will continue to be of tremendous value to the BLM and to the public we serve."

As a new Associate State Director, Johnson will share responsibility with Eastern States Director Carson W. "Pete" Culp, Jr., in leading the Eastern States Office, which is based in Springfield, Virginia. The office, which has about 250 employees of the BLM's 10,000-person workforce, administers 30,000 acres of public lands in states east of the Mississippi River. The Eastern States Office also manages 39 million acres of subsurface mineral estate.

Johnson, who has 24 years of Federal Government experience, just completed a two-year stint as the BLM's Assistant Director of Human Resources Management in Washington, D.C. Johnson, who was born in Chicago and graduated from Grambling State University, previously worked as Deputy State Director for Administration in the BLM's Arizona State Office. Prior to that, she served as a Personnel Officer for the BLM's Oregon/Washington Office and as a Personnel Officer for the Peace Corps in Washington, D.C.

Burrell, as the BLM's new Assistant Director for Human Resources Management, will develop and implement policies and guidance over such matters as equal employment opportunity, employee development and training, and occupational health and safety.

Burrell, who has 22 years of Federal service, most recently worked as the BLM's Group Administrator for Human Resources Management in Washington, D.C. Born in the nation's capital, she previously served as the Bureau's Multicultural Organization Manager and as Equal Employment Manager for the National Park Service. Burrell graduated from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, and did legal studies at Antioch Law School in Washington, D.C.
