The Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management today announced the appointment of Gwen Mason as the agency's new Assistant Director for External Affairs.
Mason's new duties will include managing the communications, Congressional relations and legislative programs for BLM, which oversees 270 million acres of public land, about one eighth of the U.S. land mass.
"Gwen is the right person at the right time for a very challenging job," said BLM Acting Director Mike Dombeck. "Her exceptional background gives her the experience to lead the progressive communications program we need in the coming years."
"Gwen's trademark has been communications innovation. Her talents in that area will be a tremendous asset to us as we strive to convey to all Americans the importance of the magnificent heritage our public lands represent," Dombeck added.
Mason moves to BLM from the Interior Department's National Biological Service, where she has held the post of Assistant Director for External Affairs. She has also served in the Interior Department's Fish and Wildlife Service and in the Office of the Secretary. In 1986, Mason was selected as a Presidential Management Intern.
The BLM, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, has an annual budget of about $1 billion and a workforce of about 9,000 employees operating mainly in the 11 western states. The agency manages the public lands for a wide variety of customers and stakeholders. These include: the American people; commercial users such as miners and ranchers; non-permitted users such as hikers, hunters and fishermen; users of information and other specialized services; adjacent landowners and others impacted by the use of the public lands; State, local and Tribal governments, and Congress.
A native of Richmond, Virginia, Mason received a B.A. in American Government from Smith College and an M.A. in Public Administration from the University of Virginia. She resides in Arlington with her husband Bill and 9-month-old daughter Grace.
