From:     State Director

Subject:  Montana/Dakotas Youth Initiative                                                              DD:  09/01/2009

Program Area:  All programs

Purpose:  To coordinate the youth programs and proposals for Montana/Dakotas in order to respond to WO requests and be proactive regarding the emphasis on youth initiatives from the Department level.

Policy/Action:  To request a Youth Contact from each field office, to have field offices review the attachment on the current efforts underway regarding youth (e.g., internship programs, environmental education programs, etc.), to provide current and future funding information, and to identify new and/or expanded projects.

Timeframe:  The review of the attachment and response to the data call is due to Ruth Miller by September 1, 2009.

Budget Impact:  The effect on the budget would be minimal; however, there may be the potential to receive funds from the WO for some of these programs.

Background:  The Department of the Interior has established an Office of Youth. This office will have a staff and funds to use for youth programs.  The BLM’s own youth initiative features a variety of programs that engage, educate, and inspire.  Focusing on youth from early childhood through young adulthood, BLM youth programs build on the spark of childhood wonder about the natural world, sustain interest through hands-on education and volunteer experiences during the school-age years, and develop into long-term engagement and stewardship, as well as pursuit of natural resource careers.

Manual/Handbook Sections Affected:  None.

Coordination:  A team met in the State Office in order to develop ideas, and be prepared for the new DOI Youth Initiative created by Secretary Salazar. The highlights from the meeting were sent to the Field Managers, along with the writeup of some current programs.  Team members present at the State Office team meeting were: Ann Boucher, Diane Friez, Theresa Hanley,
Ruth Miller, Cindy Staszak, David Wade, and Todd Walton.

Contact:  If you have any questions about this IM, please contact Ruth Miller, MSO NLCS Lead, at 406-896-5037.
