EMAIL TRANSMISSION – 12/13/06
Instruction Memorandum No. MT-2007-015
Expires: 9/30/08
To:         Field Managers
From:      Deputy State Director, Division of Resources
Subject:  Special Status Species List Update                 DD: 01/12/07
Program Area: Fish, Wildlife, and Botany programs
Purpose: The purpose of this IM is to solicit input from the field offices for information regarding special status species in order to update the species designated as sensitive by the State Director.
Policy/Action: Field offices are directed to submit data about current and potential special status species with recommendations for including and dropping species from the sensitive list, as designated by the State Director in IM No. MT-2004-082, “2004 Montana/Dakotas Sensitive Species List,” and IM No. MT 2005-055, “2005 Montana/Dakotas Special Status Plant Species Policy.”
Timeframe: Offices are to submit their recommendations to MT-923 by January 12, 2007.
Budget Impact: Minimal.
Background: Guidance for designating sensitive species was issued in 2004 for animals and 2005 for plants. These IMs have expired, necessitating a review and update of the Montana/Dakotas special status species guidance and list. Additionally, since separate guidance was issued for plants and animals, an updated list will consolidate the guidance into one document.
Manual/Handbook Sections Affected: None.
Coordination: Informal discussions have been held with several field offices to determine the need for updated guidance.
Contact: Questions regarding special status plants and special status animals should be directed to Nora Taylor, at 406-896-5032, and Gayle Sitter, at 406-896-5024, respectively.
