Subject:       Reporting AML Physical Safety Hazards and HazMat Sites

The Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) program is being audited by the Office of Inspector General (OIG).   Reluctance to report either AML safety hazards or hazmat sites to managers and program leads has been reported in several of the offices that have been visited. We would like to emphasize that all such sites that are discovered by employees or the public should be reported to their immediate supervisors and to the AML and/or Hazmat coordinators for the Field Offices. The report should also be forwarded to the Montana State Office AML and Hazmat Coordinator, Peter Bierbach, at 406-896-5033. Funds within the 1640 and 1010 AML subactivities are available to remediate dangerous sites as soon as possible.

The BLM AML program in Montana and South Dakota has a comprehensive inventory and has made excellent progress in closing dangerous mines. But additional sites may be discovered that have more significant hazards associated with them than the inventoried mines. We have the flexibility within the program to close or remediate these newly reported sites.
