EMAIL TRANSMISSION – 3/22/07
Information Bulletin No. MT-2007-028

To:      Field Managers

From:    Deputy State Director, Division of Resources

Subject: Montana/Dakota’s FSCruiser Workshop                DD: 04/06/2007

The Montana/Dakota’s forest management program has been using the National Timber Cruising Program (NATCRS) developed by the Forest Service’s Forest Products Measurements Group in Ft. Collins, Colorado. Use of this cruising program has increased our efficiency and accuracy in determining product quantities and appraised values as required in 43 CFR §5420.0-6.

Late in 2006, NATCRS was updated to a “Windows” compatible format and renamed to FSCruiser. The old “DOS” version of the cruising program is no longer supported by the Forest Service.

The Montana/Dakota’s forestry team has indicated a need and a desire to upgrade to the new FSCruiser program. In response to this, the State Office program lead has been in contact with the Forest Products Measurements Group and arranged a 3-day workshop to be held at the State Office April 24–26, 2007. Monday April 23 and Friday April 27 are travel days.

The 3-day agenda will focus on:

April 24: FSCruiser – Application and Use in BLM Timber Cruising
April 25: FSCruise Processing – Reports that will meet BLM needs
April 26: Use and Application of field data recorders (Allegro’s)

Field managers are encouraged to send their foresters or other specialists that design and implement timber sale cruises to this workshop. This workshop has been coordinated with the Forest Products Measurements Group to meet BLM timber cruising needs and assessments.

Please forward the names of the individuals planning on attending the FSCruiser Workshop to Bill Hensley by COB April 6, 2007. Questions pertaining to this workshop may also be directed to Bill Hensley at (406) 896-5042.
