Subject: Fire Prevention Plan
Program Area: Occupational Safety and Health
Purpose: This Instruction Memorandum (IM) provides employees and volunteers of the Montana State Office and Billings Field Office with guidelines to follow when using products or machines that could be a fire hazard in the workplace if improperly used or stored.
Policy/Action: Attachment 1 contains the fire prevention plan for the Montana State Office and Billings Field Office, located at 5001 Southgate Drive, Billings, Montana. All employees should become familiar with the contents of the plan.
Timeframe: This IM takes effect immediately.
Budget Impact: No additional budget impact is anticipated.
Background: The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 29 CFR 1910.38 requires the implementation of a written fire prevention plan which lists the major workplace fire hazards and their proper handling and storage procedures, potential ignition sources such as welding and smoking and their control procedures, and the type of fire protection equipment or systems which can control a fire involving them.
Manual/Handbook Sections Affected: This IM does not require update of manuals or handbooks. Related material for reference purposes may be found in Departmental Manual 485, Chapter 19, Fire Safety and BLM Manual Handbook 1112-1, Chapter 17 – Fire Safety.
Coordination: This IM was coordinated with the Billings Field Office and the Division of Support Services.
