Subject: Grizzly Bear Management Plan for Western Montana         09/15/06

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (MFW&P) recently released the Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement for the “Grizzly Bear Management Plan for Western Montana.” This proposed plan was developed to address the future of grizzly bear management in western Montana outside the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.

The proposed management focuses on the 17 counties in northwest Montana. This would address management issues within the Missoula, Butte, and Lewistown Field Offices, however, the plan would also cover areas outside the 17 counties if the bear populations expand.

You can access the draft management plan document at:

Please review the document and consider potential conflicts with your local programs, possible adjustments in the RMP, and consistency with current bear management.

Please respond with questions or comments by September 15, 2006, to
Gayle Sitter, Fisheries and T & E Biologist, at 406-896-5024.  A unified response will be prepared by the state office.
