Central Montana District
Gary “Stan” Benes is the District Manager for the Central District of BLM Montana/Dakotas. Headquartered in Lewistown, Mont., the Central District includes the Lewistown Field Office and the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. Benes began his federal career with the U.S. Forest Service and worked in both Fire Management positions as well as Line Officer positions on the Clearwater, Nezperce, Lolo, Hiawatha, Gallatin, Custer, and Malheur National Forests. Prior to his present DM position he was the Forest Supervisor for the Malheur National Forest in eastern Oregon. Benes has been a long-time participant in the Incident Management Team program, and presently serves as one of the Eastern Montana Incident Commanders. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh, with Bachelor of Science Degrees in History and Geography, with a minor in Sociology. He also earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Natural Resources Conservation along with Master credits in Fire Ecology from the University of Montana. He is an avid “Griz” and Green Bay Packer fan, as well as an avid upland bird hunter under the Big Sky.
