BLM closes Ft. Meade Byway, campgrounds for cleanup
BELLE FOURCHE, S.D. --- The Bureau of Land Management South Dakota Field Office has closed the Fort Meade Byway and adjacent campgrounds due to safety concerns associated with ongoing clean-up efforts.
The BLM-administered Fort Meade Recreation Area, located east of Sturgis, experienced impacts related to the recent snow storm which collapsed trees and rendered the road impassable for through-traffic.
The BLM is cleaning up debris and clearing trees that may pose a risk to the public and campground structures. The public can still walk-in to access the recreation area for hunting and other activities.
“The tree damage was extensive,” said BLM Outdoor Recreation Planner Elizabeth Stiller. “Broken branches and weakened trees will only be cleared along the road and campgrounds but the danger will remain in the rest of the area.”
The public is advised to be mindful of these potential hazards when using the area. The BLM will reopen the Byway to vehicle traffic once two-lane travel is restored; which will be announced via news release.
