BLM to Burn Slash Piles Near Wise River, Helena, Wolf Creek
BUTTE (Oct. 31, 2012) – The Bureau of Land Management’s Butte Field Office will burn slash piles during the upcoming months in Beaverhead, Silver Bow and Lewis and Clark counties, near Helena, Wise River, and Wolf Creek.
The slash piles to be burned are located in the Bryant Creek, Virginia Creek, Deer Park Drive, Titan Gulch and Triangle Gulch areas, as well as the Log Gulch and Holter Lake Recreation Sites. Smoke may be visible in these areas.
The piles will be burned when the ground is covered with snow or when the surrounding fuels are wet enough to minimize the potential for unwanted fire spread. Burning will take place only when weather conditions and forecasts allow for adequate smoke dispersion. Operations are conducted following air quality standards set by the Montana Department of Environmental Quality.
The timing of the burns depends on weather and fuel conditions. The prescribed burns will be implemented by fire managers from the BLM with assistance from the Forest Service.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
