BLM Completes Burn at Matthews Recreation Area

Fire personnel from the BLM Miles City Field Office completed a prescribed burn yesterday at the Matthews Recreation Area located east of Miles City.

Weather conditions were optimal for crews to ignite approximately 15 acres of millet, oats and sorghum, which were planted as part of this cooperative, ongoing project between Pheasants Forever, Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and the BLM. The plantings were intended to serve as a food and cover source for pheasant, grouse and other wildlife and were burned as part of a long-term plan to transition the area back to native plants and grasses.

Thursday morning, BLM and DNRC personnel arrived on site and performed the necessary pre-operation briefings and safety checks while standing by for authorization to begin the burning. Fire personnel commenced igniting the dry vegetation with drip torches around 10:30 a.m. and were completed by noon.

With the ground cover cleared, project personnel will now be able to spray non-native pasture grass as it emerges this spring and prepare the ground for fall planting.

Native grasses scheduled for planting this fall include; Indian Ricegrass, Basin Wildrye, Stream bank Wheatgrass, Thickspike Wheatgrass, Small Burnet, Prairie Coneflower, Purple Prairie clover and White Prairie clover.
