BLM Closes North Hills To Shooting And Campfires

BUTTE (June 28, 2012) – The Bureau of Land Management’s Butte Field Office has issued a fire restriction order temporarily banning all forms of shooting and the use of campfires in the North Hills area 10 miles northeast of Helena, effective at 12:01 a.m. on June 29.

The restriction prohibits discharging any firearm; or building, maintaining, attending, or using a campfire.

“We have already had at least three fires start there this year,” said Kelly Acree, acting field manager for the Butte Field Office.  “Two were due to individuals shooting incendiary rounds at targets, and one was from a campfire.  In the interest of public safety and in light of the current fire and weather conditions in the area, we feel it’s best to issue this restriction now.”

Access to the BLM’s property in the North Hills area is still open; the restriction only applies to shooting firearms and building campfires.  The posted notices restrict all forms of shooting in the North Hills area until further notice.

A copy of the restriction order and a map of the affected area are available at the Butte Field Office, 106 North Parkmont, Butte, MT 59701.  For more information, call (406) 533-7600.

As the Fourth of July approaches, the BLM would also like to remind everyone that fireworks are prohibited on BLM-administered lands.
