Central Montana RAC to Meet in Lewistown

The Bureau of Land Management’s Central Montana Resource Advisory Council (RAC) will meet September 20 & 21, at the BLM’s Central Montana District Office, at 920 NE Main Street in Lewistown.

The September 20 meeting will begin at 10 a.m. with a 30-minute public comment period and is scheduled to adjourn at 5 p.m.

The September 21 meeting will begin at 8 a.m. with a 30-minute public comment period and is scheduled to adjourn at 3 p.m.

During these meetings the RAC will participate in, discuss or act upon these topics: a roundtable discussion of RAC members’ concerns; a discussion of BLM’s youth education programs; consider a recommendation about one-time river use permits; hear district managers’ updates; hear a briefing on the status of the HiLine Resource Management Plan; and discuss BLM’s small parcel list and possible exchanges with the State of Montana.

This council is a 15-member citizen advisory group that advises the Secretary of the Interior on a variety of management issues associated with public land management in Montana.

For additional information about the RAC or this meeting, contact Craig Flentie at 406-538-1943.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
