BLM-Montana/Dakotas Welcomes Communications Director

Bureau of Land Management Montana/Dakotas today announced the addition of Melodie A. Lloyd as director of communications to its State office in Billings.  Lloyd was mostly recently a public affairs specialist with the BLM’s headquarters office in Washington, D.C. BLM Public Affairs Specialist Mary Apple acted in the position for several months and returns to her duties with the State office.

“Mel comes to us with a well-rounded knowledge of natural resource experience, both at the national and field levels of the BLM,” State Director Jamie Connell said. “Her insight and expertise will make her a valuable member of the BLM’s State Leadership Team and enhance our ability to bring awareness to the good things we do for public lands and the people of Montana and the Dakotas.”

Lloyd has also worked as a BLM public affairs specialist and fire information officer in western Colorado, supporting several field offices and two interagency fire management units. Prior to that, she worked at the BLM’s National Operations Center in Denver.

Lloyd, a native of rural Colorado, received her bachelor’s degree in Organizational Development from the Regis University College for Professional Studies in Denver. As outdoor enthusiasts, Lloyd and her husband look forward to exploring all that Montana and the Dakotas have to offer. She can be reached at (406) 896-5260 or malloyd@blm.gov

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
