Great Falls Grazing EA Available for Review |
The Bureau of Land Management’s Lewistown Field Office has completed a preliminary environmental assessment (EA) for renewing grazing leases within the Great Falls planning area and has made it available for public comment. The preliminary EA analyzes alternatives that address future management of 100 grazing allotments in Meagher, Cascade, Lewis and Clark, Pondera and Teton counties. The proposed action has been identified as the agency’s preferred alternative, but a final decision has not been made. Following consideration of the comments received regarding the preliminary EA, a final EA will be prepared and a final decision will be documented in a decision record. Written comments must be received by October 10, 2010, and should be sent to the BLM, Lewistown Field Office Manager, 920 NE Main Street, Lewistown, MT 59457. All substantive comments will be fully considered and evaluated in the preparation of the final Great Falls Area Grazing Lease Renewal EA. If you have any questions or are interested is reviewing a copy of the preliminary EA, please contact Dan Brunkhorst or Adam Carr at (406) 538-1900. The EA is also available on the BLM website at: http://www.blm.gov/mt/st/en/fo/lewistown_field_office/Watershed_Plans.html. |

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. In Fiscal Year (FY) 2011, recreational and other activities on BLM-managed land contributed more than $130 billion to the U.S. economy and supported more than 600,000 American jobs. The Bureau is also one of a handful of agencies that collects more revenue than it spends. In FY 2012, nearly $5.7 billion will be generated on lands managed by the BLM, which operates on a $1.1 billion budget. The BLM's multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. |
