BLM To Burn Pine Hills Slash Piles

The BLM Miles City Field Office will be burning slash piles in the Pine Hills area located about 10 miles east of Miles City between Dec. 9  and Jan. 31, 2010.

Approximately 400 piles of the non-marketable timber and debris will be burned as weather conditions permit. Burning will occur between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. and smoke may be visible.

The piles are a byproduct of a hazardous fuels reduction project initiated to reduce the threat of wildfire spreading from BLM-administered lands into the adjacent Pine Hills Ranchettes Subdivision.

For more information on the burning or to get advice about maintaining defensible space in wildland-urban areas call BLM Supervisory Range Technician Paul Pauley or the Miles City Interagency Dispatch Center at (406)233-2900.

The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM's mission is to manage and conserve the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations under our mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield. In Fiscal Year 2013, the BLM generated $4.7 billion in receipts from public lands.
