Smoke may be visible at times in the Helena/Marysville, Clancy, and Townsend areas over the next few months as the Bureau of Land Management conducts three prescribed burns.

Each burn will be initiated only under favorable weather conditions, and burn days will vary. Fire crews will continue to monitor the areas after burning is completed.

The first project is in the Great Divide Ski Area, about 15 miles northwest of Helena. The objective is to reduce the susceptibility of the remaining pine stands to mountain pine beetles, protecting forest health and retaining a mature pine forest.

The second burn is in the South Elkhorns, about five miles southeast of Radersburg. Previously logged areas in Johnny’s Gulch and Keating Gulch will be burned to promote forest health and reduce fuels.

Third, previously logged areas in Lump/Ohio Gulch about five miles northeast of Clancy will be burned to reduce the threat of wildfire and improve wildlife habitat and forest health.
