BLM FSEIS to be Released Soon
Work on the Bureau of Land Management’s Final Supplement to the Montana Statewide Oil and Gas Environmental Impact Statement and Proposed Amendment of the Powder River and Billings Resource Management Plans is nearly complete.
The Final SEIS provides information and analysis on phased federal coal bed natural gas development in southeast Montana. The Final SEIS, however, is not a decision document by itself.
An advance copy of the document has been sent to the Montana Governor’s office for a 60-day review to assure consistency with state and local plans. The SEIS will be available to the public late next week.
The Department of the Interior’s Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management is the responsible official for this proposed plan amendment. He will sign a Record of Decision when the Governor’s review is completed but not sooner than 30 days following publication of the formal Notice of Availability in the Federal Register, expected by the end of this month or early November. When the Assistant Secretary signs the Record of Decision, it will be the final decision for the Department of the Interior.
Persons and organizations already on the SEIS mailing list will receive a cd copy of the document by mail. A copy of the Final SEIS will also be available online late next week at: www.blm.gov/eis/mt/milescity_seis. Interested parties can also request a cd or printed copy from the BLM Miles City Field Office, P.O. Box 219, Miles City, MT 59301.
