Wild Horses & Burros Coming To Kalispell June 28

People interested in adopting a wild horse or burro will have an opportunity on June 28 at the Flathead County Fairgrounds, 265 N. Meridian Road,  Kalispell. The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is offering the adoption of animals to qualified people through the Wild Horse and Burro Adoption program.

After caring for the animal for one year, the adopter is eligible to receive title or ownership from the Federal Government. In conjunction with the adoption, BLM is sponsoring two free horse training demonstrations on June 27 at 1 pm and 5 pm at the fairgrounds. Instructor for the demonstrations is Lesley Neuman, a well known horse trainer.

You must meet facility requirements and have an approved application in order to bid on any animal. Advance applications to adopt are highly recommended. The minimum bid per animal is $125. For an adoption application, or for more information on the requirements, call toll free 1-866-4MUSTANGS. General information is available at BLM’s website http://www.wildhorseandburro.blm.gov.

Those interested in adopting these horses and burros will be able to view them at the fairgrounds starting Friday, June 27 from 10 am to 7 pm. Gates open at 7 am on June 28 for viewing and registration.

The BLM manages public lands throughout the West and their vast array of resources to benefit both current and future generations. One of the BLM’s legislative responsibilities is to manage and preserve the wild horse as “living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West.” The BLM gathers wild horses and burros from the western range in order to maintain an ecological balance between wild horses and burros, native wildlife and domestic animals grazing on western public lands. The gathered animals are put into BLM’s Wild Horse and Burro program.
