Fort Meade Endurance Ride
A horse endurance ride will take place at the Fort Meade Recreation Area east of Sturgis on July 26 and 27. Riders will compete in 25-mile and 50-mile events on both days. The public is invited to come and watch.
To accommodate event participants, the Fort Meade Backcountry Byway, aka the BLM Road, will be closed to motor vehicles between the Alkali Creek Recreation Site and the junction of State Highway 34 from 3 p.m. on July 25 until about 3 p.m. on July 27.
The camping areas at Alkali Creek Recreation Site and Alkali Horse Camp have been reserved for the event participants from July 25 through July 28.
The Centennial Trail’s Fort Meade Trailhead will be used as a veterinary check-point on both days.
The recreation area will remain open for day use during this period, but the public should be aware of the presence of horses on roads and trails. Trail protocol and safety give horses priority over bike and foot travel.
