The Bureau of Land Management has scheduled three meetings Aug. 19, 20 and 21 to gather public comments on a Spring Creek Coal Company application to modify its federal lease.
The public scoping period officially starts on Aug. 1.
The proposed modification by Rio Tinto Energy would add 498 acres and approximately 39.5 million tons of coal to its federal coal lease. The lease modification area is also located in important sage grouse habitat.
The first meeting will be in Miles City on Aug. 19 at the BLM Miles City Field Office, 111 Garryowen Road; from 7:00-9:00 p.m. The second meeting will be held in Sheridan, Wyo. on Aug. 20 at the Fulmer Public Library, 335 West Alger; from 6:30-8:00 p.m. The third meeting will be in Billings on Aug. 21 at MSU Billings, 1500 University Drive; in the student union building Beartooth Room from 7:00-9:00 p.m.
Forms will be available at each meeting for persons wishing to provide scoping input and interested parties have until Sept. 2, 2008, to comment.
Spring Creek Coal Company operates the Spring Creek Coal Mine at Decker, Mont. The permit area occupies 6,926 acres, contains approximately 3,772 acres of federal coal leases and produces about 15 million tons of coal per year.
