Shepherd Ah Nei OHVers Will Need Permits
Beginning March 15, 2008, ATV and motorcycle riders using the Shepherd Ah Nei OHV (off-highway vehicle) area will need to purchase a special recreation permit for each vehicle they operate.
The popular OHV area is located on Bureau of Land Management-administered public lands north of Shepherd. The BLM completed the Shepherd Ah Nei Travel Management Plan in 2005. The special recreation permit is a provision of that plan.
Permits will be available beginning February 1, 2008. They can be purchased at either the BLM Billings Field Office or the public room at the BLM Montana State Office. Both offices are located at 5001 Southgate Drive. Proof of vehicle registration will be required for each permit.
Multiple Unit/Family Permits are $105 per calendar year. Six or less permits can be purchased by one individual for a family or if an individual owns more than three ATVs or motorcycles. All vehicles must be registered to the same address. Single Unit Permits are $35 per calendar year. Day-Use Passes are $5 per day. These passes may be purchased at the OHV area by using a fee envelope at the kiosk in the parking area. All of the permit fees will be used for improvement and maintenance of the site.
The area is open for riding from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. The parking area is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Riders are encouraged to call the BLM’s 24-hour information hotline to obtain current information on riding conditions, closures, or limitations in effect. That number is 896-5014.
