Shepherd OHV Riders Need 2009 Permit

Motorcycle and ATV riders who plan to use the Shepherd Ah Nei OHV (off-highway vehicle) area in 2009 need to purchase a special recreation permit for each vehicle they will operate there.  The popular OHV area is located on Bureau of Land Management-administered public lands north of Shepherd.

Those riders who plan on using the area more than seven times in 2009 can save money by purchasing a yearly permit rather than purchasing day use passes. Permits can be purchased at either the BLM Billings Field Office or the public room at the BLM Montana State Office.  Both offices are located at 5001 Southgate Drive.

Multiple unit/family permits are $105 per calendar year.  Six or fewer permits can be purchased by one individual for a family or if an individual owns more than three ATVs or motorcycles.  Proof of vehicle registration will be required for each permit and all vehicles must be registered to the same address.

Single unit permits are $35 per calendar year.  Proof of registration is not required for single unit permits.

Day-use passes are $5 per day.  These passes may be purchased at the OHV area by using a fee envelope at the kiosk in the parking area. All of the permit fees will be used for improvement and maintenance of the site.

The area is open for riding from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.  The parking area is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Riders are encouraged to call the BLM’s 24-hour information hotline to obtain current information on riding conditions, closures, or limitations in effect.  That number is 896-5014.
