Date: October 30, 2007 Contact: Travis Lipp, 605-720-0747 or 605-210-0741 BLM to Begin Prescribed Burning The Bureau of Land Management will conduct prescribed burns on 100-300 acres in the southern half of the Fort Meade Recreation Area near Sturgis this week. Weather permitting, burning will take place Oct. 31and Nov. 1. The prescribed burn units are southeast of the Fort Meade VA and east of Interstate 90. Smoke will be visible from Interstate 90, State Highway 34, and Sturgis, and will be monitored to minimize impacts to sensitive areas. The BLM Road (Back Country Byway) will be closed to through traffic while burning is taking place. The burns will help maintain healthy, open park-like stands of ponderosa pine, and maintain and enhance native plant species.
