The BLM will begin burning slash piles this winter to reduce the amount of fuels left from hazardous fuels treatments near Lead and Sturgis, S.D.
Pile burning will take place throughout the Fort Meade Recreation Area and northwest of the National Cemetery. In the Lead area, pile burning will take place near Rutabaga Gulch, Nevada Gulch, and Englewood.
These projects are all on lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management. When finished, crews will have completed about 300 acres of pile burning in these areas.
Burning will take place only when there are at least two inches of snow on the ground and the forecast indicates continued snow coverage for at least three more days following ignition. Smoke will be monitored to minimize impacts to smoke-sensitive areas.
The BLM will be working cooperatively with crews from the state of South Dakota. Crews will be working in these areas as long as weather conditions warrant. For further information contact Travis Lipp at (605) 720-0747 or (605) 210-0741.
