BLM TO BEGIN PRESCRIBED BURNING
The Bureau of Land Management plans to conduct prescribed burns on 194 acres in the southern half of the Fort Meade Recreation Area near Sturgis, S.D., on March 12 and 13, weather permitting. These units are southeast of the Fort Meade VA Hospital and east of Interstate 90.
The burns will help maintain healthy, open park-like stands of ponderosa pine and maintain and enhance native plant species. Smoke will be visible from Interstate 90, State Highway 34, and Sturgis. The BLM Road (Back Country Byway) will be closed to through traffic while burning is taking place.
