Fort Meade Endurance Ride
A horse endurance ride will take place at the Fort Meade Recreation Area east of Sturgis on July 28 and 29. There will be 25-mile and 50-mile events both days. The public is invited to come and watch.
To accommodate event participants, the Fort Meade Byway, aka the BLM Road, will be closed to motor vehicle traffic from the Alkali Creek Recreation Site to the junction of State Highway 34 from dusk on Friday, July 27, until dusk on Sunday, July 29.
The Centennial Trail’s Fort Meade Trailhead will be used as a veterinary check-point on both days.
The camping areas at Alkali Creek Recreation Site and Alkali Horse Camp have been reserved for the event participants from July 27 through July 29. These two sites will close after the endurance event and will re-open several days after the Motorcycle Rally ends.
The recreation area will remain open for day uses during this period but the public should be aware of the presence of horses on roads and trails.
If you have any questions please contact Bill Monahan at BLM’s South Dakota Field Office 605-892-7003.
