BLM Defers Acres from July Oil and Gas Lease Sale
The Bureau of Land Management is deferring oil and gas leasing on about 73,600 acres in Garfield, McCone and Carbon counties initially scheduled to be offered in its July 31 lease sale.
“We decided to defer some specific areas from leasing to give us time to review new information on essential sage grouse habitat and the potential impacts of oil and gas development,” said BLM Montana State Director Gene Terland.
All of the deferred acreage is associated with sage grouse winter range or sage grouse leks.
The deferred acreage involves 96 parcels that had been nominated by industry for leasing in BLM’s bimonthly oil and gas sale. Two parcels were deferred in their entirety. The vast majority of the acreage being deferred—about 72,500 acres—is in McCone and Garfield counties. About 300,000 of the 337,000 acres listed on the original sale notice are in those two counties.
A final sale list can be found on BLM’s web site, http://www.blm.gov/mt.
