Judith Landing

The Judith Landing area was placed on the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District in 1975. Among the many events identified within this Historic District are a Corps of Discovery campsite, May 28, 1805; Fort Chardon Trading Post, 1844-1845; Isaac Stevens 1855 Lame Bull Treaty; Camp Cooke (first military post in Montana), 1866-1870; PN Cable Ferry, 1880-1908.

On the south side of the river at Judith Landing, the entire river bottom was once part of a large, open-range cattle spread founded by T.C. Power, merchant prince of Fort Benton, and John Norris, who managed the ranch for the company. Note: The P-N Ranch is private property. Landowner permission is required for access.

The Judith Landing is campground, on the north bank of the river, is located in a grassy, shaded cottonwood grove. Judith Landing is the common take-out point for many boaters coming through the White Cliffs section of the river.

Activities: Tent camping, RV camping (no hook-ups), boating, fishing, picnicking.

Facilities: Eight campsites with fire rings and picnic tables, one vault toilet and a campground host site. Also at the site are a BLM contact station at the boat launch, Certified Undaunted Stewardship site, shuttle vehicle parking area, one vault toilet, garbage dumpsters, and a boater self-registration box.
Note: A small, privately-owned country store is located next to the contact station which operates on a seasonal basis. Call 877-538-4890 for further details.

Location: Take Montana State Highway 236 south from Big Sandy, Montana. Total distance to site from Big Sandy is 44 miles. Highway is paved for approximately 17 miles with the remainder being improved gravel. The site may also be reached via the PN Road (improved gravel) from Winifred, Montana, approximately 23 miles to the south.

Season/Hours: Campground open May 15 through October 15. BLM contact station/camp hosts available May 1 through September 30.
