Hunting

Hunting opportunities in Lewistown Field Office area are plentiful. Several big game species are available for hunting including mule deer, white-tailed deer, pronghorn antelope, Rocky Mountain elk, mountain goat, and bighorn sheep.

Many local stores sell the permits during the season however, there are special hunts in certain areas which are available by drawing only. Deadlines for these drawings vary and can be obtained through Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks in Great Falls, MT. Upland game bird hunting is plentiful in the area. These species include sharp-tailed grouse, sage grouse, ring-necked pheasant, wild turkey, and hungarian partridge. Only three species of migratory birds are hunted here. These include Mourning doves, common snipe, and sandhill cranes.

Mountain lions are hunted in the Judith Mountains, the Snowy Mountains, and in the Missouri River breaks and black bear hunting is available in the Judith and Snowy Mountains.
