Summary:

The Bureau of Land Management is hosting a series of listening sessions on the federal coal program. These discussions will seek information about how the BLM can best carry out its responsibility to ensure that American taxpayers receive a fair return on the coal resources managed by the federal government on their behalf

There are extensive coal resources on the 700 million subsurface acres of federal minerals managed by the BLM. Roughly 40 percent of the coal produced in the United States in recent years has come from federal lease tracts. It is the responsibility of BLM to ensure that these public resources are managed responsibly and provide a fair return to the American taxpayer.

The BLM is initiating this discussion in response to Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell’s call for an honest and open conversation about modernizing the federal coal program.
