Welcome to Cress Creek Nature Trail

Take a journey through Oblique aerial photo showing the trailsagebrush-grass communities, over juniper covered slopes and along a lush perennial creek. You will see sweeping views of the Snake River Plain, mountain ranges and volcanic geology. The trail is a journey through changing times and environments. The photograph below looks east to the Teton Mountains in Wyoming (see horizon line in photo). The trail is located above the South Fork of the Snake River and indicated with a blue line in the photo.

The first part of Cress Creek Trail is a half mile long and wheel-chair accessible to the creek. It is an easy grade to the two sets of switchbacks and after that a moderate grade to the creek. The loop trail is a half mile long, gravel and moderately difficult.

Wear a good pair of walking shoes and bring water, binoculars and a field guide to enjoy all of the opportunities along the trail. As you hike the trail, notice the changes in the environments around you. Interpretive panels are scattered along the trail to help you identify and understand the changing environments.

How to Get to Cress Creek...

The Cress Creek Nature Trail lies roughly 20 miles northeast of Idaho Falls above the South Fork of the Snake River.

From Idaho Falls, take the North Yellowstone Highway north through town. Follow Highway 26 northeast to Jackson. Drive past both Ririe exits and turn north (left) on 160 E after passing mile marker 352 and follow it north to the river. 

Immediately after the road crosses the bridge at the South Fork of the Snake River, turn left onto the gravel road headed toward Rexburg. Travel 1 ¼ miles to a small parking area on the road’s right side with a Cress Creek sign and restroom.
