Wildland fire is considered the number-one threat to sage-grouse because of its devastating effects on remaining sagebrush habitat. While prevention or swift suppression are preferable, the same remoteness and ruggedness that help keep sagebrush steppe intact complicate efforts to protect it from fire — which makes rehabilitation plans crucial to the BLM's sage-grouse conservation efforts.
