Meteorological (Met) Towers
Wind energy projects like the one proposed for China Mountain use meteorological (met) towers to gather data on wind speed and intensity to help determine the nature of a wind energy resource in a particular area.
In December 2007, the BLM authorized placement of four met towers on public lands in the Jarbidge Field Office, in association with proposed plans to develop wind energy on China Mountain. Two additional met towers were authorized in October 2009.
These authorizations were granted on the condition that the towers are temporary, and the grant comes with stipulations and design specifications that reduce the potential environmental effects of their installation and operation.
