The Mud Flat ACEC is located near the eastern (Grandview) end of the Owyhee Uplands Backcountry Byway. Also known as the Mud Flat Road, the 104-mile byway is the primary access route to central Owyhee County.
The road is primarily gravel, mainly one and a half lanes wide, and generally passable for most passenger vehicles during the summer months.
Look for a small wayside turnout on the north side of the road where the oolite comes into view, about 10 miles from the
eastern end of the byway (the junction with Hwy-78). »
After a stop at the wayside, continue west on the byway to reach the Poison Creek Picnic Area and the Little Jacks Creek Wilderness. Juniper and mahogany woodlands and the North Fork Owyhee Wilderness lie further on, as the road winds through rimrocked plateaus laced with the canyons of the Owyhee River system on the way to Jordan Valley, Oregon, the byway's western terminus.
