Plan Amendment | Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve

The BLM is preparing a land use plan amendment and associated environmental impact statement (EIS) for the Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve.  The effort is focused on alternatives for livestock grazing, including reduced grazing or no grazing, as ordered by the U.S. District Court of Idaho in 2012.

The plan amendment and EIS will also incorporate grazing management measures for sage-grouse conservation developed in the BLM's sub-regional EIS/plan amendment for Idaho and southwestern Montana

Although the BLM and the National Park Service (NPS) co-manage the Monument and Preserve, grazing is not permitted on NPS-managed lands, and grazing decisions resulting from this plan amendment will apply strictly to BLM-managed lands within the Monument.
