Firefighters working for the Twin Falls BLM gain valuable experience in rough, steep terrain, several different fuel types, and large, fast-moving wind-driven steppe fires. For example, firefighters working in South-Central Idaho could be assigned to a wildfire burning in the juniper-covered, rolling foothills of the Jarbidge Mountains, in the forested, steep mountainous terrain of the Sawtooth Mountain Range, or the sagebrush steppe desert highlands.

In South-Central Idaho BLM's Twin Falls District, headquartered in Twin Falls, encompasses approximately 4.5 million acres of public land. Within that area, the district staffs three primary fire stations in Burley, Shoshone, and Twin Falls. During fire season, the district also staffs seven remote fire stations located in Rogerson, Kimama, Carey, Bellview, Juniper Butte, Malta, and Almo. Overall, Twin Falls District staffs 20 type IV heavy engines including two Tatra engines. A 6-10 person fuels crew works on fuels inventory, monitoring, hazardous fuels reduction, and will sometimes respond to wildland fire incidents. A 12-14 person helicopter crew is stationed in Twin Falls, and several wildland fire dispatchers and Prevention/Information staff work at the offices in Shoshone.

Twin Falls District wildland firefighter personnel needs vary between fire seasons and depend upon seasonal firefighters returning every spring. We strongly recommend applying for wildland firefighting jobs in December and January, especially since early consideration dates apply. What is South-Central Idaho Like?

South-Central Idaho is home to the world-famous Snake River and its beautiful Snake River Plain. Within this area also lies the deep, wild basalt canyons of the Jarbidge River along on Idaho’s southern border; and the foothills of the Sawtooth Mountains rise to the north. The Sawtooth National Forest, the City of Rocks, Craters of the Moon National Monument, Pomerelle and Sun Valley Ski Resorts, and the Jarbidge Mountains are all within two hours’ drive and provide a wide array of recreational opportunities in the region.
